Newsletter 3 - December 2007

BACTS Database Committee,

Antwerp, December 19, 2007

Dear BACTS member,
Dear Data Manager,

The 2005 report is almost ready and will be available from the website very soon.
Currently we are working on the 2006 report. This report will be available within a few weeks.

The memory of understanding is can be found in the public domain of the website. This document describes the functioning of the committee. Confidentiality is a keyword and we guarantee that only the aggregated report will be published. We will never release patient, surgeon or center specific information.

May we ask to respect the deadlines for the 2007 data?

  • Data submission before March 1, 2008.
Correction of error-report by the end of April.

This will give us the opportunity to respect our own deadline.
We want to present the finished 2007 report at the annual meeting in November 2008.

We’d like to announce two projects

- First the project on Acute Type A dissection.

  • All patients with an acute type A aortic dissection who underwent surgery between Jan 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008 should be included. We will ask demographic, procedural, outcome and follow-up data. The follow-up is one year. The registry will be quite extensive, but as it concerns only a few patients for each center, the extra workload will be acceptable. As we have to organize projects to improve the quality of care in cardiac surgery (Royal Decree 15 Feb 1999 on the college of cardiac surgery) this project is mandatory for everybody.

- Second we’d like to invite you to participate in the project on mortality after isolated CABG

  • As I presented during the last annual meeting, we started with a pilot project on mortality after isolated CABG: http://www.bacts.org/documents/PDF/Scientific/DatabaseBACTS2007.pdf. We showed that is feasible to gather outcome data on a multicenter level. All patients undergoing isolated CABG in 2006 were included, going from patients with stable angina, to patients in cardiac arrest. Age, gender and additive EuroSCORE were noted. The 3 month survival was studied. Mortality was recorded as a censored event.
  • We invite you to participate in this project. All patients that underwent CABG in 2007 should be included. As we want to integrate this project in the 2007 report the deadline for submission is 31 May 2008. The format should be as shown in the following table.
  • Participation in this project is voluntary.

pt ID date of birth gender operation date event time censoring Additive euroscore
1 dd/mm/yyyy m/f dd/mm/yyyy 91 1 x alive day > 91
2       47 0 x dead day 47
3       1 1 x reop day 1, this patient will reenter the registry
4       52 1 x lost to follow-up day 52

On behalf of the database committee I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Bernard Stockman
